One of the most famous theatres in Manchester is the Royal Exchange, founded by a group of directors, Michael Elliot, Caspar Wrede, Richard Negri as well as James Maxwell and Braham Murray, it was developed in 1976 in the old cotton Exchange building. However, in 1996 the building was extensively damaged when a bomb was detonated within 50 metres of the theatre, re-construction work took two years to complete and with funding from the national lottery, which gave it funding to create a second performance stage. There are a host of amities within the new section of the building, such as restaurant, bar and corporate facilities.
