Cabaret is set in Berlin in 1931 and deals with the rise of Nazi power. The musical focuses on the Kit Kat Klub, which is a thriving nightspot attracting visitors from across Europe, an infamous club which sees Sally Bowles performing night after night creating the sexually charged atmosphere this musical is remembered for!
Directed by Rufus Norris, this is a very memorable play which raises many matters of emotion: the excellent abilities of the cast create an extraordinary production.
It isn't until the arrival of Clifford Bradshaw, a budding writer who has come to Berlin from America to write his first novel, that the action begins. As tensions lead to the war and the Nazi regime comes to take over power, the feelings of the people are expressed through the newly found relationship between Clifford and Sally, as the effect of the looming war troubles them and their friends. It is often stated that this musical is recommended for over 12s, subject to parental consent, as the plot deals with many adult matters and the staging includes some scenes of nudity.
This musical has been described as a "breathtaking new production”, “A strong and daring revival of a great musical”, “Brilliant – Cabaret increasingly looks like one of the defining musicals of the post-war era”, to name but a few of the glowing reports.
This is an excellent classic musical which has been re-invented to an extremely high quality.
